EveryDay Math
Grade 5
Unit 6 - Using Data; Addition and Subtraction of Fractions
Lesson Objectives
6.1 - To review data landmarks and methods for organizing data.
6.2 - To develop measurement and probability concepts.
6.3 - To introduce stem-and-leaf plots; to provide practice with measuring lengths and with using a protractor.
6.4 - To provide experiences with data presented in line plots and stem-and-leaf plots.
6.5 - To investigate the relationship between sample size and the reliability of derived results.
6.6 - To provide experiences with displaying and analyzing data.
6.7 - To introduce contour maps as data displays.
6.8 - To provide a relative distance model for the addition and subtraction of fractions.
6.9 - To provide additional references for fraction concepts.
6.10 - To reinforce the use of common denominators to compare, add, and subtract fractions.
Note: Lessons are typically covered in one class period. Lessons 6.1 - 6.10 will be followed by a review lesson, and then a summative assessment of these skills. Formative assessments may be given throughout the lesson to help students gauge how well they are mastering the lessons, and when they need to seek out additional help from me. Students seeking additional support should sign up for that help during “Quiet Time.”
