Unit 8 - Fractions and Ratios
Lesson Objectives
8.1 - To review the use of equivalent fractions in comparisons.
8.2 - To develop addition concepts related to mixed numbers.
8.3 - To develop subtraction concepts related to mixed numbers.
8.4 - To provide practice adding fractions with unlike denominators and using a calculator to solve fraction problems.
8.5 - To introduce finding a fraction of a fraction.
8.6 - To develop a fraction multiplication algorithm.
8.7 - To provide experience finding the product of a whole number and a fraction.
8.8 - To introduce multiplication with mixed numbers.
8.9 - To broaden students’ understanding of calculating percents to include discounts.
8.10 - To provide practice finding the whole, given a fraction or a percent of the whole.
8.11 - To provide experience locating information on maps and charts and using percents to make estimates.
8.12 - To introduce division of fractions and mixed numbers.
Note: Lessons are typically covered in one class period. Lessons 8.1 - 8.12 will be followed by a review lesson, and then a summative assessment of these skills. Formative assessments may be given throughout the lesson to help students gauge how well they are mastering the lessons, and when they need to seek out additional help from me. Students seeking additional support should sign up for that help during “Quiet Time.”
